Dressmaking - Children's Clothing - (3 sessions) £60 Thu, 29/06/2017 - 10:30 to 13:30

This workshop is aimed at beginners and students who would like to return to sewing.

Dressmaking can seem very daunting to beginners, however making children’s clothing seems more approachable and achievable. Plus you get to share what you have made with your children or grandchildren.

Each student can bring along an easy child’s dressmaking pattern for a dress, skirt, shorts or trousers to work through during these 3 sessions.

We will be on hand to advise and guide you through any techniques and stages you may need help with, eg inserting a zip, sleeves, hem or neckline.

You will learn how to:

-         Cut out a pattern

-         Identify pattern symbols

-         Transfer pattern markings

-         Finish seams to a professional standard

-         Insert a zip or buttonhole fastening if required

Machine Applique and Freehand Machine Embroidery - £35 Tue, 27/06/2017 - 18:00 to 21:00

We have combined our two most popular workshops into one 3 hour class. This allows you to sample both techniques as well as learn twice as much.

The first half of the workshop will be focusing on machine appliqué.

You will learn how to:

-          Transfer your image onto fabric

-          Choose the right stitch and size for the project

-          Experiment with letters and motifs

You will then move onto Freehand Machine Embroidery after a tea break!!

You will be shown how to set up your machine for this technique by lowering the feed dogs and changing the tension.

You will then practice some common stitches used for this technique and learn when to use them.

Once you are confident you will then create your own picture using calico and a selection of fabric, felt and metallic threads.

All materials, tea, coffee and cake are all included.

Piped Cushion with Zip - £35 Wed, 14/06/2017 - 18:00 to 20:30

Learn two fantastic techniques that will improve your sewing skills and take a simple cushion to the next step.

Firstly you will cut out your cushion panels for a 40cm x 40cm (16" x 16") cushion cover before moving onto making the matching piping, using piping cord and your cushion fabric. We will show you have to create the piping strip, insert the piping cord and advise on what machine foot to use.

You will then move onto inserting the zip, using the best technique to do this with piping.

Once the zip is inserted you will sew the remaining cushion cover and finish to a neat standard.

You will need to provide 3/4m of light to medium upholstery fabric, matching thread and a 14" zip.

Tea, coffee, cake and piping cord included.

Introduction to the Sewing Machine - £25 Thu, 22/06/2017 - 10:30 to 12:30

A two hour session introducing you to the uses and features of a sewing machine.

You will learn basic skills such as:

-      Threading a machine

-      Inserting a bobbin

-      Winding a bobbin

-      Knowing what tension and stitches to use for different fabrics

You will be shown how to create a neat seam, hem and perfect corners.

You will be shown how to change the machine foot and learn when to use different feet for a variety of techniques.

We will also cover how to sew a buttonhole and experiment with machine applique.

This course is aimed at students who have not yet bought a sewing machine but would like to take up a new hobby, as well as those who need a refresher course to get them started.

Tea, coffee and cake included
